TL;DR: A 200 gallon tote holds about 757 liters (26.7 cu ft). Full of water, the liquid alone weighs about 1,668 lb (8.34 lb per gallon), so the tote, pallet base and forklift must be rated above that. Many buyers searching "200 gallon tote" actually need either a 275 gallon IBC for liquids or an open-top HDPE bulk container for dry or wet product. LT Plastics, an authorized Bonar Plastics distributor based in Phoenix, AZ, supplies HDPE bulk containers, hoppers, tanks and speed bumps to US plants.

Liquid or Solid? That Decides the Tote

  1. Liquids: you need a closed container with a valve. Check if a 275 or 330 gallon IBC fits your space better; the extra capacity often costs little floor space.
  2. Wet or dry food product, parts, meat, produce: an open-top one-piece HDPE container with a lid is easier to clean and fill. See food-grade totes.
  3. How to Calculate Your Real Size

  4. Volume per batch or per shift, in gallons or cubic feet.
  5. Product density: weight per gallon = 8.34 x specific gravity.
  6. Maximum load your forklift and racks accept.
  7. Pick the tote that holds one batch without going over that load.
  8. Example: a sauce with specific gravity 1.1 weighs about 9.2 lb/gal. 200 gallons = about 1,835 lb plus the tote.

What We Know That Buyers Often Miss

  9. Check the stacking rating full, not empty. A tote that stacks empty may not stack loaded.
  10. Nominal capacity is not fill capacity; leave headspace for liquids.
  11. Ask for the resin compliance statement (FDA 21 CFR 177.1520) if it touches food. Read does FDA compliant mean food grade?
