Can You Reuse a Food-Grade Tote for a Different Product?

The resin may be food safe, but the tote's history decides if it can be reused. These are the checks food plants use before changing what goes in a tote.

TL;DR: A tote made of FDA-compliant HDPE can be reused for food only if it previously held food (never chemicals, fuels or non-food product), it can be fully cleaned and inspected, and your food safety plan allows the changeover, including allergen controls. FDA rules require equipment to be cleanable and kept from contaminating food (21 CFR 117.40 and 117.80). If the history is unknown, do not use it for food.

LT Plastics, an authorized Bonar Plastics distributor based in Phoenix, AZ, supplies HDPE bulk containers, hoppers, tanks and speed bumps to US plants.

Why History Matters More Than Resin

HDPE can absorb some substances. Residues from a previous product can migrate later even after washing. That is why plants keep food totes dedicated and label them. Compare with options for empty IBC totes that are not food candidates.

    Changeover Checklist

  1. Confirm what the tote held before (records).
  2. Clean, rinse and sanitize per your SOP.
  3. Inspect corners, valves and gaskets; replace gaskets for allergens.
  4. Record the changeover in your sanitation log.
  5. Use color or labels to separate products.
  6. Valves and gaskets on IBCs are the hard part. Open-top containers like Bonar food-grade totes have no valve to clean. See the meat and poultry sanitation checklist and FDA compliant vs food grade.

What We Know That Buyers Often Miss

  7. Buying enough dedicated totes per product is usually cheaper than validating changeovers again and again.
  8. Keep the resin compliance statement on file for every model you use.
