A hopper is sold in cubic feet, but your forklift lifts pounds. Use bulk density to pick the right size.

TL;DR: Pounds in a hopper = cubic feet x bulk density (lb per cu ft). A 30 cu ft hopper of a material at 40 lb/cu ft holds 1,200 lb; at 70 lb/cu ft it holds 2,100 lb. Pick the hopper by the weight your forklift and the hopper are rated for, then by volume. Bonar hoppers range from about 11.5 to 57 cu ft. LT Plastics, an authorized Bonar Plastics distributor based in Phoenix, AZ, supplies HDPE bulk containers, hoppers, tanks and speed bumps to US plants.

Use your own bulk density: weigh a known volume (for example a 1 cu ft box) of the material as it sits in the hopper.

    Steps

  1. Measure or get your material's loose bulk density.
  2. Multiply by hopper volume.
  3. Add the empty hopper weight.
  4. Compare with forklift capacity at the load center (forklift capacity check).
  5. Check discharge: will it flow? Read hopper wall angle and bridging and 45 degree bottom discharge.
  6. What We Know That Buyers Often Miss

  7. Wet or packed material is heavier than loose dry material. Measure as used.
  8. A bigger hopper you cannot lift full is a slower hopper.
  9. Fill to a weight limit, not to the top, for heavy materials.
  10. See all hopper models and types of industrial hoppers.

    FAQ

How do I calculate hopper capacity?

Cubic feet x bulk density = pounds.

What if I do not know bulk density?

Weigh a known volume of the material in a box; divide weight by volume.
