TL;DR: One US gallon of water weighs about 8.34 lb. A full 275 gallon tank holds about 2,294 lb of water, 330 gallons about 2,752 lb and 1,000 gallons about 8,340 lb, before adding the tank. For other liquids multiply by specific gravity. Other Liquids

Weight = gallons x 8.34 x specific gravity. Example: a 1,000 gallon tank of a solution with SG 1.3 holds about 10,840 lb. Check your chemical against the tank first with the HDPE chemical compatibility checklist.

    Floor and Pad Check

  1. Divide total weight by the tank's base area to get pounds per square foot.
  2. Compare it with the floor or pad rating from your engineer.
  3. Vertical tanks need full, flat support under the whole base, not points.
  4. For portable IBCs see IBC tote weight empty and full; for forklift moves see the forklift capacity check.

What We Know That Buyers Often Miss

  5. A tank that is never "full" in practice still needs to be designed for full.
  6. Concentrated chemicals are often 20 to 80 percent heavier than water.
  7. Do not move a tank that still holds liquid unless it is designed for it.
