Why Your Plant Keeps Replacing Plastic Bins Every Year (and How to Stop)
If bins are a yearly purchase, the problem is usually handling, wall design or the wrong container type. Here is how to find the cause and justify a better bin.

TL;DR: Plastic bins that fail every year usually fail in the same three places: forklift tines hitting the base or walls, cracks at corners from impact in cold rooms, and walls bowing in stacks. Fix the cause first, then compare containers by cost per year of use (purchase price divided by years in service), not by unit price.
A heavier rotomolded HDPE container costs more per unit and often less per year. LT Plastics, an authorized Bonar Plastics distributor based in Phoenix, AZ, supplies HDPE bulk containers and speed bumps to US plants and distribution centers.
Quick Facts
| Failure | Typical cause | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Base or skid broken | Tines driven into the body, dragging | Defined forklift entry, wider skids or runners |
| Corner cracks | Impact, especially when cold | Thicker walls, impact-resistant HDPE |
| Walls bowing in stacks | Stack load above design, heat | Check rated stack height, reduce stack |
| Lid or edge damage | Dropping and dragging | Handling rule, reinforced rim |
Find the Cause Before Buying More
Pull the last batch of failed bins and sort them by where they broke. If most failures are at the base, it is a forklift problem. If they are cracked at corners, it is impact or cold. If they deform, it is stacking. Each points to a different fix; buying the same bin again repeats the cost.
Cost per Year of Use
Use your own numbers:
| Input | Bin A | Bin B |
|---|---|---|
| Price per unit | Your quote | Your quote |
| Years in service at your plant | From your records | Supplier and reference users |
| Cost per year | Price ÷ years | Price ÷ years |
Add the cost of downtime, product loss and replacement orders if you track them. This table is what purchasing and finance need to approve a higher unit price. For more context see the HDPE container lifespan guide.

FAQ
How long should a plastic bulk bin last?
It depends on handling, temperature and load. Use your own replacement records as the baseline.
Is a heavier bin always better?
Not always. Match wall thickness and design to how the bin is handled and stacked.
Can damaged bins be repaired?
Outside food contact use, sometimes. In food zones, cracked or welded bins are a cleaning risk.
