Wood Pallets and Bins Failing Food Plant Audits: When to Switch to HDPE Pallet Boxes

Wood is cheap until an auditor asks how you clean it. Here is how food plants decide where plastic pallet boxes are worth it.

TL;DR: Food plants get audit findings on wood pallets and bins because wood is porous, hard to sanitize, and sheds splinters and nails. FDA's current good manufacturing practice rule requires equipment and utensils to be cleanable and kept in a way that protects food (21 CFR 117.40).

You do not need to replace every wood pallet: switch the areas where product or ingredients contact the container, or where the unit enters washdown or processing zones, to cleanable HDPE pallet boxes. LT Plastics, an authorized Bonar Plastics distributor based in Phoenix, AZ, supplies HDPE containers, pallet boxes and speed bumps to US plants and distribution centers.

    Why Wood Gets Flagged

Auditors look for foreign material risk and cleanability. Wood absorbs moisture, can harbor microorganisms in its surface, and breaks into splinters and loose nails. If the plant cannot show how wood equipment is cleaned and inspected, it becomes a finding under the facility's food safety plan.

    Plan the Switch by Zone

  1. Map zones: contact, processing, receiving, outbound.
  2. Switch contact and washdown zones first: HDPE pallet boxes with smooth interiors and drains.
  3. Color-code: one color for food, another for waste. See HDPE container hygiene in food plants.
  4. Get documents: a written resin compliance statement. See does FDA compliant mean food grade?
  5. Write the cleaning procedure into your sanitation program.
  6. Cost Thinking

HDPE costs more per unit but lasts many trips and cleans in place. Compare cost per trip with cardboard vs HDPE pallet boxes. For traceability rules that also touch containers, see the FSMA 204 checklist.

What We Know That Buyers Often Miss

Replacing all wood at once is expensive and unnecessary. Auditors care about the zones where risk is real. A zone-based switch spreads cost and closes findings faster.

    FAQ

Are wood pallets banned in food plants?

Not by a blanket rule. They are risky in contact and processing areas because they are hard to clean.

Can HDPE pallet boxes go in washdown areas?

Yes. HDPE does not absorb water and can be washed; follow your sanitation procedure.

What documents prove a pallet box is food-safe?

A supplier statement that the resin complies with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for the intended use.
